Whenever I start promoting any site, I pretty much submit that site to these directories:

Dmoz.org

Yahoo! Directory

JoAnt.com

I have about a 50% success rate with Dmoz.org so far. It's a fire-and-forget directory for me, I sometimes don't even check whether I'm listed.

I usually pay for Yahoo! I've never been able to get listed for free. Has anyone had any success with the free submit?

Never really tried Yahoo! Directory. Heard too many stories of how free submit never works.

Not sure if I'm prepared to pay for a redirect link Confused

Dmoz is almost a joke. I've waited months and months and sometimes years and nothing's come of any of my submissions.

There are free submissions to Yahoo for non-commercial sites, and I've been able to get one or two in that way but mostly I pay for them as well.

As for paying for a redirect link that isn't so - Yahoo does do some click tracking on some links but they are otherwise static. If you spider a Yahoo directory page all the paid listings are static links.

and considering that Google still considers this an important link, it's worth the $300 submission annually.

In Terms of link building through directories I've also found Business.com a worthwhile link. It doesn't cost much and can not only provide link pop but also highly qualified leads. And with a paid listing you can also get a few deep links to your site, not just a homepage link.

As for DMOZ you can also submit deep links. I've found articles I've written listed in DMOZ that someone else has submitted.
